hello I'm Steve Lockhart right now I'm going to go through how you diagnose a person with back pain what sort of things you're looking for and the sort of body or the pattern of being balanced that you might see in a body that has problems Daniel's joined us today and he's going to help us go through this he's going to be our model so the first thing I want to

cover is the sort of areas where you can get back pain now a lot of people get it around this middle of the back area here they can feel it right on the spine or in under the shoulder blades a little bit this is quite common another area is around the middle of the back in the thoracic region and then thirdly and probably the most common is the lower back and that

can be in the center right around the sacrum joint or off to one side usually around here just just at the bottom of these erector spinae muscles and you can have it either side or in some cases right across the whole lower back and it's just a whole the whole area feels very stiff and painful now from that of course you can get into sciatica where the pain travels through the body can

down one of the legs that can go to the front of the leg or through the back of the leg it can go down to the calf and all the way to the foot in some cases it just depends on how the sciatic nerve is put under pressures for that to happen now when you're looking at someone's back you want them to stand or be in a balanced position so the weights

got to be even on both legs you're looking to see how straight the pelvis is and you're looking to see how straight the spine is and basically what each side of the back looks like compared to the other side now with Daniel you might see there's a bunching in this right shoulder and there's a bit of a difference if you look at the two erector spinae muscles that run either side of his

spine so there's a lot of tension up here in the back and in the upper back and it's affecting the way the shoulders are sitting one of them is overworked and it's a bit more bound up than the other but when one's affected the other is normally affected in a way as well so when we loosen him up we probably find that they'd both look quite different now as you can notice with

Daniel there's a slight tipping of his right hip so is his pelvis is up higher on the left side and down a little bit on the right side what that means is he's got a short right leg I came out people might think he must have a short left leg because the pelvis was up on the left side but in actual fact because his feet are level on the ground that leg

has to pull down to reach the ground when in when it's a little bit short by preference okay so when it pulls down it tends to tilt that side of the pelvis down and when that comes down that one goes up so it creates that little tilt and this puts the pressure and you can see the difference from this part of his lower back to this there's a there's a tightness here which

is sort of resisting that pulling down and as it tends to be a bunching here and that difference creates quite a bit of pressure to build up in this area so if a person gets gets weak or this builds up for a long period of time they do a lot of jumping around or running or sport or sort of they're on their feet for long hours or even sitting for long hours then

this area would start to this circulation in this area would start to be affected and it would create pain and stiffness and then eventually it could even bring the sciatic nerve into play and create problems down the legs so when you're looking at the back the key areas to look at are these erector spinae muscles and when we we treat these in the self treatment program it's there's a lot of focus on

treating these and trying to release any pressure from these erectus Bonny's and the way the pelvis is sitting you want it you want it to look nice and level across here you don't want that tilt and again in the in the program there's lots of work you can do with the ball and different exercises which will help unlock the pelvis and keep that more balanced and that flows on to the hamstrings and there's

work you can do in the hamstrings and then a very important part of the program which is the SLM yoga is the squatting the the wall sitting and that'll help take out any problems with the quadricep muscles at the front so once you've evaluated the body you can then have a get an idea of where the problems are with Daniel for example I see his right show is a problem which is probably why

his right leg shortened up so the tension has built all the way down through that whole side and that can be from his sport or whatever and with a younger person of course you can find it's quite easy to get that out as with an older person that maybe have had it there for a long time could be up to you know 20 years or so then it can be more difficult so

if you see a lot of difference in the shoulders a lot of imbalance in the shoulders where one side looks quite different to the other then you know the shoulders are a problem and you're going to have to work on those because if the hips out or if the hips locked up as this one is you're not going to get rid of it until you unlock the shoulders they go very closely together

so with Daniel we would say okay let's focus on the shoulders let's do a lot of work on there and then we'll also do some of the ball work on the hips and the hamstrings plus doing the wolfes wall squat and the SLM yoga technique everything should come together very quickly you
